About

Hi there and welcome!

We are Zoé and Tyler, the creators of GradFood. We live in sunny California with our cat, Jazz, and when we’re not rock climbing, running, or studying, we love spending time cooking together.

After meeting in a mutual graduate class, it didn’t take long for us to realize that we both loved cooking. On our second date, Tyler impressed me with seared scallops, and on our third, I returned the favor with an albacore niçoise salad. I (Zoé) am originally from France where cooking and eating are prominent social customs and I was grateful to discover that Tyler was also a fan of this model.

Tyler and I consider ourselves true foodies. We love trying out new cuisines, coming up with creative recipes, and in general, we don’t take cooking too seriously. Cooking to us is a mindful exercise that lets us catch up with each other and prepare for the week ahead. As graduate students, we make sure to prioritize this activity even when our schedules get hectic. To streamline the process, we started keeping track of our recipes and eventually started this blog to share our culinary ideas with others.

What makes this blog different is that we are busy people here to help other busy people. We’re not here to tell you that cooking 5-hour meals every night is feasible. We’re here to tell you that quick and easy cooking can also be healthy and delicious. We have lots of tips and tricks to make cooking less daunting. Just take a stab! Worst case scenario, you’ll get a tasty meal out of it.

A few things for you to consider as you embark on your culinary adventures with our blog:

What this blog is not

  • Unlike what you may think from the name, this isn’t a website for recipes to make during graduation. We came up with “GradFood” since we’re both graduate students (one PhD student and one medical student) and both love cooking.
  • Unlike other food blogs you may have experienced, we are not about long-winded blog posts where you have to keep scrolling down until you eventually find a recipe hidden under 10 pages of text. We’re here to cook. So “less frills, more recipes” is our motto.
  • We don’t follow a specific theme or diet for our food (g.vegan, paleo, etc.). We enjoy all foods and try to use as many different ingredients. If you have dietary restrictions, just substitute or omit. Feel free to improvise- after all, in French, “chef” translates to “boss” and you are the chef of your kitchen!

What this blog is

  • GradFood is a place to share nutritious, delicious, and expeditious recipes for everyday use.
  • In this blog, you can expect to find an eclectic mix of different foods, spices, cuisines, and cooking methods. As Tyler affectionately says, we cook “au pif” (literally, “by nose,” this means cooking by feel or instinct in French) and that’s how we keep it interesting.
  • We also post helpful resources including Holiday Gift Ideas for the Home Chef, How to Start a Food Blog, and 10 Tips & Tricks for Food Bloggers.
  • This gives us the opportunity to show you that healthy cooking is accessible to all, even the busiest folk out there.
